  4. Section Ic explains how you can sign up to receive press releases
  5. directly from the experimental MIT system by using an automated email
  6. server.  The present system was not designed to handle high levels of
  7. message traffic. A more powerful system will become available in due
  8. course, and in the meantime, it would be appreciated if you used this
  9. service sparingly.  One appropriate current use is secondary
  10. redistribution and archiving. If you use it, you will be carried
  11. forward when the more powerful system that replaces it.

  49. B. NOTES ON WIDELY AVAILABLE SOURCES

  52. 2.      CompuServe's White House Forum (GO WHITEHOUSE) is devoted to
  53.     discussion of the Clinton administration's policies and
  54.     activities. The forum's library consists of news releases and
  55.     twice daily media briefings from the White House Office of
  56.     Media Affairs. CompuServe members can exchange information and
  57.     opinions with each other in the 17 sections in the forum's
  58.     message area. The message board spans a broad range of topics,
  59.     including international and United Nations activities,
  60.     defense, health care, the economy and the deficit, housing and
  61.     urban development, the environment, and education and national
  62.     service.
  63.  
  64. 3.      On America Online the posts are sent to the White House Forum,
  65.     located in the News & Finance department of the service and
  66.     accessible via keywords "white house" and "clinton."  The
  67.     White House Forum on America Online contains the press
  68.     releases from the White House, divided into the categories
  69.     "Press Briefings," "Meetings & Speeches," "Foreign Policy,"
  70.     "The Economy," "Technology," "Health Care," and
  71.     "Appointments." The area features a message board so you can
  72.     discuss the releases with other AOL members, and a searchable
  73.     database for easy retrieval of releases in the topic that
  74.     interests you.

  76. 4.      MCI Mail users can access daily information on the administration's
  77.  
  78.     programs provided by the White House through MCI Mail bulletin
  79.     boards.  The available boards are: WHITE HOUSE ECONOMIC, WHITE
  80.     HOUSE FOREIGN, WHITE HOUSE SOCIAL, WHITE HOUSE SPEECHES and
  81.     WHITE HOUSE NEWS.  A listing of these boards can also be
  82.     obtained by simply typing VIEW WHITE HOUSE at the COMMAND
  83.     prompt.

  88. C. DIRECT EMAIL DISTRIBUTION
  89.  
  90. If you don't have access to the these accounts or if you would prefer
  91. to receive the releases via email, then the next section details how
  92. to sign up for this service.  The server is not set up to answer
  93. email letters, comments or requests for specific information. To
  94. reach this MIT server, send email:

  99. The server works by reading the subject line of the incoming message
  100. and taking whatever action that line calls for. If you want to sign up
  101. to automatically receive press releases, then your subject line would
  102. begin with the word RECEIVE.  You can then specify what kind of
  103. information you are interested in receiving. The categories of
  104. information are:
  105.  
  106. ECONOMIC POLICY
  107.         Get releases related to the economy such as budget
  108.         news, technology policy review, etc.
  109.  
  110.  
  111. FOREIGN POLICY
  112.         Get releases related to foreign policy such as
  113.         statements on Bosnian airdrop, Haitian refugee status,
  114.         etc.

  117. SOCIAL POLICY
  118.         Get releases related to social issues like National
  119.         Service (Student Loan) program, abortion, welfare
  120.         reform, etc.

  122. SPEECHES
  123.         All speeches made by the President and important
  124.         speeches made by other Administration officials.

  126. NEWS
  127.         Transcripts of press conferences released by the White
  128.         House Communications office, as well as the
  129.         President's remarks in photo ops and other Q&A
  130.         sessions.

  134. So, if you wanted to sign up to get releases related to the economy
  135. your email message would look like this:

  140. When you send a signup message to the clinton-info server, it sends
  141. you back a status message letting you know what distribution streams
  142. you are signed up for. If you ever want to check on what groups you
  143. are signed up for send the following message:

  148. You can stop receiving email releases by sending a REMOVE message to
  149. the clinton-info server. The word REMOVE would be followed by whatever
  150. distribution stream you wanted to drop. If you wanted to stop
  151. receiving message about the ECONOMY then your mail would look like
  152. this:

  156. You could substitute SOCIAL, FOREIGN, SPEECHES, NEWS or ALL for
  157. ECONOMY in the above message and you would be dropped from that
  158. distribution list. If you send the subject line REMOVE ALL, then you
  159. will be taken off the email distribution system all together and will
  160. not receive further releases of any kind.

  162. You can also ask for help from the automated server.  Send an email

  168. The server will respond by sending you a detailed form that will guide
  169. you through the process of signing up for the various distribution
  170. streams.  As you will quickly discover, there is a automatic form
  171. processing interface that parallel the quick and easy subject line
  172. commands discussed here. More detailed help is available by sending

  178. Finally, if you want to search and retrieve documents, but you do not
  179. have access to the retrieval methods discussed in section II, you can

  242.     Folks without WAIS clients or gophers that act as WAIS
  243.     clients may telnet to sunsite.unc.edu and login as swais
  244.     to access this information via WAIS.

  246. 1.b    GOPHER is a distributed menuing system for information access on the
  247.     Internet developed at the University of Minnesota. gophers are
  248.     client-server implementations and various gopher clients are
  249.     available for nearly any computing platform.  You may now use
  250.     gopher clients to assess the White House Papers and other
  251.     political information on SunSITE.unc.edu's new gopher server.
  252.     You may also add links from your local gopher server to
  253.     SunSITE for access to the White House Papers.
  254.  
  255.     For gopher server keepers and adventurous clients to access
  256.     SunSITE you need only know that we use the standard gopher
  257.     port 70 and that our internet address is SunSITE.unc.edu
  258.     (152.2.22.81). Point there and you'll see the references to
  259.     the Politics areas.
  260.  
  261.     For folks without gopher clients but with access to telnet:
  262.     telnet sunsite.unc.edu login: gopher The rest is very straight
  263.     forward. Browsing options end with a directory mark (/),
  264.     searching options end with an question mark (?). There's
  265.     plenty of on-line help available.

  267. 2.      No special instructions.
  268.  
  269. 3.      The CLINTON@MARIST log files which contain all the official
  270.     administration releases distributed through the MIT servers
  271.     are available via anonymous FTP. These logs contain in
  272.     addition to the official releases, the posts that comprise the
  273.     ongoing discussion conducted by the list subscribers.
  274.     To obtain the logs:
  275.     FTP MARISTB.MARIST.EDU - the logs are in the CLINTON directory
  276.     and are named CLINTON LOG9208 thru CLINTON LOGyymm where yymm
  277.     stands for the current year and month. Problems should be

  282. 4.      Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility is
  283.     providing all Clinton documents on technology and privacy
  284.     at the CPSR Internet Library, available via
  285.     FTP/WAIS/Gopher at cpsr.org /cpsr/clinton (and in other
  286.     folders as relevant). For email access, send a message
  287.     with the word "help" at the 1st line of text to
  288.     listserv@cpsr.org.

  290. 5.      The FedWorld Computer System, operated by the National Technical
  291.     Information Service, archives White House papers in a traditional BBS
  292.     type file library.  Connect to FedWorld by calling (703) 321- 8020.
  293.     No parity, eight data bits and one stop bit (N-8-1).  FedWorld
  294.     accommodates baud speeds of up to 9,600.  White House papers are
  295.     located in the W-House library of files.  To access this library from
  296.     the main FedWorld menu, enter <f s w-house>.  Files are named with the
  297.     first four digits being the release month and day (e.g. 0323XXX.txt).
  298.     Some standard abbreviations after the date include:

  301.         pc  - Press Conference transcript
  302.         pr  - Press Release
  303.         AM  - AM Press Briefing
  304.         PM  - PM Press Briefing
  305.         sch - The President's public schedule
  306.         spch- Text of major speeches.

  308.     These files are saved in ASCII format.  Files can be viewed online by
  309.     requesting to download a file and then selecting (L)ist as the
  310.     download protocol.   This will display the file a screen at a time.
  311.     White House papers are kept in the above format for up to two months.
  312.     Papers more than two months old are compressed using Pkzip into a
  313.     single file that contains all of the files for that month (e.g.
  314.     0193.zip contains all papers released during January 1993).  In
  315.     addition to White Documents, FedWorld also provides a gateway to more
  316.     than 100 government funded BBSs and computer systems.

  321. III.  HOW DO I SEND EMAIL TO THE WHITE HOUSE?
  322.  
  323. The White House email system is under construction.  This is a new
  324. project and suffers from all of the problems common to a startup
  325. operation.  The Communications office is currently working on defining
  326. what this system will do, as well as trying to come up with equipment
  327. and staffing to make sure that it works.  Email messages are
  328. currently being printed out and responses are being sent out via US
  329. Mail.
  330.  
  331. Nobody wants this new venture to work more than the staff that has
  332. devoted so many hours to getting it up and running.  But much time and
  333. effort will be required before the system is truly interactive.  In
  334. the mean time, they will need a little patience from the electronic
  335. community.  If you send a message to the White House, please include a
  336. US Post office address for replies.
